William Metcalf Schutte, 78, Professor Emeritas at Lawrence University, died Saturday August 23, 1997 at Elderhaus in Appleton.
Bill was born May 9, 1919 in New Haven, CT., son of the late Louis and Anna (Metcalf) Schutte. After graduating from the Hotchkiss School and serving in the Army during World War II, he received B.A., M.A., and PhD degrees from Yale University. He was a professor of English at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1947 to 1960, the last four years acting as Assistant to the President. He joined the faculty of Lawrence University in Appleton, WI in 1960, and was appointed Lucia R. Briggs Professor of English from 1965 until his retirement in 1984.
William M. Schutte was the author of Joyce and Shakespeare, Personal Integrity, co-author of Communication in Business and Industry. He also wrote or edited countless other books and professional articles.
He served on the Board of Directors of Attic Theatre in Appleton for many years, acting as its president from 1963-1966. He was also an active member of the Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist (UU) Fellowship for over 36 years.
Bill married (the late) Susan Roberts McDowell on May 15, 1943. They are survived by two sons, Scott ( Lori) Schutte, Wausau, WI and Kirk ( Kris) Schutte, Madison, WI, and by daughter Kim Schutte ( Charlie) Holbrook, Huntsville, AL. Grandchildren are Ryan William Holbrook, Rachel Whitney Holbrook, Katherine Schutte, and William S. Schutte. Also surviving him is his former wife, Anne Jacobson Schutte.
A memorial service will be held in Harper Hall at Lawrence University on Wednesday (August 27) at 2:00 p.m. immediately followed by a reception at the Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 800 N. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (Green Bay Chapter), the Fox Valley UU Fellowship, or to the William M. Schutte Summer Research Fund at Lawrence University (Development Office).
