THE BLACK.

The Black River in Central Wisconsin has a reputation for some of the best intermediate white water runs in th the state, so my buddy Mike and I decided to check it out one overcast summer day. We knew that the water level would be low, so we planned on wading a few stretches, leaving us plenty of time to fish. We put in downstream from Greenwood on the left bank and soon encountered our first rapids. We made it through without dragging, but the farther downstream we got the longer and shallower the numerous radips became, so we spent a lot of time dragging the canoe. With moderate water levels it was obvious that this would be a great stretch to run, and in high water levels this river must be a real barn burner.

I caught a few small bass and a smaller walleye at the heads of some of the rapids, but didn't fish too much due to the shallow water. The banks are wooded and quite scenic, with little development. We took out at the OO bridge, which is just downstream from a rapids. This bridge is a good place to scout the river to see if water levels are high enough (or too high) for a good trip.
