GLACIAL DRUMLIN BIKE TRAIL - WESTERN SECTION

This trail consists of two, and sometimes three, unconnected sections. The Western section begins in Cottage Grove west of Madison and goes to a few miles north of Jefferson in south central Wisconsin. The Eastern section starts about 10 miles west of Jefferson and goes to Waukesha.

A four mile part of the Western section may be closed at times due to aerial spraying of herbicides. This part is about five miles west of Lake Mills and consists of vast fields of various crops, including potatoes. When my wife Kris and I rode through here in mid July, the trail was open.

Mega-agriculture west of lake Mills

This trail is very straight and flat, traversing enormously productive farmland. Intermittent stretches of wetlands add contrast. Many sections of the trail are lined with trees which lend shade and comfort. Traffic was fairly light on the summer Sunday that we rode from Deerfield to past London.

Culvert near London

The trail crosses a few meandering streams, but has relatively few bridges. Cottage Grove and Deerfield are typical small Wisonsin towns where suppies may be obtained. Lake Mills has a pleasant downtown and a lake where you may relax after a hard grind. Overall, this is a pleasant trail to ride, with a good surface, good scenery, and proximity to Madison on one end and the Milwaukee area on the other.
