Levis Mound Hike.

.

The view from atop the mound

The mound country of West Central Wisconsin is a unique area well worth exploring, especially when you can hike, mountain bike, or ride your horse on some challenging trails to get to some scenic overlooks. This new recreational area is just North of Lake Arbutus, where the Black and East Fork of the Black meet. You can hike many miles of trails, and bike or ride your horse on some of the trails in this area. In the winter the easier trails can be XC skied.

From the parking lot on Fisher Ave. take one of several trails that climb to the top of the Levis Mound. These trails are steep and fairly rugged, but the view from the top is well worth the climb. Several overlooks offer panoramic sweeps of the land North of Black River Falls. Trails from Levis Mound lead to other mounds nearby, but these mounds are wooded and the ones we hiked to do not have any overlooks. The trails are well marked and of varying difficulty, so a pleasant hike through sun-dappled woods is available for just about anybody.

There is a brand new building at the parking lot with bathrooms and a bubbler, but it wasn't open when we stopped by on a summer week day. We were the only people there, but I have no doubt that as more people discover this new recreational opportunity it will become more crowded.
