THE UPPER WISCONSIN

The lower Wisconsin river is a well known and well used paddling river, but the very upper part of the Wisconsin has some remote and enjoyable paddling pleasures of its own.

Above Rhinelander the river is small and twisty, with only a few downed trees as obstacles to navigation. There are also some pretty campsites along this stretch.

My wife Kris and I paddled this part of the river on one of our post-Labor Day trips. We like to spend Labor Day weekend relaxing at our summer home near Iola. Then on Monday, we head north while all the tourists head south. We can meander the north woods camping, paddling , and biking when the weather is good and staying in B and B's and sightseeing if the weather should turn rainy. There are are usually plenty of campsites available and the B and B's usually have vacancies. Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan have plenty of lovely waterfalls to visit and a few other attractions as well.

We found this stretch of the river to be quite remote, with few cabins along it. The only sign of civilization we found were a plethora of minnow traps that someone had set along the river for many miles. The river is small and twisty, and we did have to carry or rock over a few downed trees.

The campsites along the river are fairly remote and looked like very pleasurable places to spend the night.
